Bonn – in the Heart of Europe

Since the historical vote of the German Parliament on June 20, 1991, to transfer the Parliament and parts of the Government from Bonn to Berlin, a remarkable development has taken place in Bonn. The former federal capital has defined and implemented a new, independent profile as the host city of the headquarters of global companies in the future oriented sector of telecommunications and logistics, as the hub of a renowned region of science and research and as a host city to the United Nations. Today, Bonn counts more inhabitants than in 1991 and many more jobs, it has a modernised economic structure, one of the lowest unemployment rates in North-Rhine Westphalia and still shows a spending power considerably above the average. Bonn is a city of short distances and offers the advantages of a medium size big city alongside with those of much larger cities, for instance in the cultural field. One of the essential advantages is the high residential quality as well as the quality of leisure time facilities on offer. The winner in Bonn has been above all the service sector (without public administration jobs) with an increase of 27,1 % or 22.400 jobs between June 1991 and June 2002. This promising and traditionally dominating sector has considerably expanded: it counts a total number of 105.171 employees, that is a proportion of 72,3 % of all employees obliged to pay social insurance in Bonn. In comparison, public administration jobs have diminished during the same period by nearly one third. 600 companies per year have been founded in Bonn on average (mean balance of registrations and cancellations).
Over 7.300 hotel beds, nearly 500.000 overnight guests and about 1 million overnight stays have placed Bonn in 2002 at one of the top ranks in hotel industry among the major cities in North-Rhine Westphalia. Compared to other cities of a similar size, Bonn has congress and hotel capacities far above the average: there are more than 30 conference hotels and conference venues, in particular the former plenary hall of the German Parliament, which is already used as a high level international congress centre, often for larger UN events. In order to face all future requirements, it is planned to enlarge this unique ‘International Congress Centre Bundeshas Bonn - IKBB’, inter alia by the construction of a second congress hall seating about 6000.
